Sunday, October 11 is National Coming Out Day!
Every year on October 11, there is a celebration of individuals who have come out to others as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or queer (LGBTQ). This date has been celebrated since 1988 and it's intended to raise awareness of those who identify on the LGBTQ spectrum are everywhere. National Coming Out Day celebrates diversity, shines a light on an important movement, and can be life-changing for LGBTQ individuals.

National Coming Out Day includes more than just gay or lesbian
It has grown in the number of states participating
It used to be dangerous [to come out]
Knowledge drive out hate
It was once headquartered in West Hollywood (is now in New Mexico)

The average coming out age nowadays is 16 years old. This means some young people are coming out in elementary, middle, or high school. You, as their caregiver, are a crucial part in their journey of self-exploration and self-expression. Often times, telling parents/guardians is the most nerve-racking part of coming out. Your reaction and actions have more of an impact than you might realize. Some things to remember...
You don't have to be an expert or know everything, just simple reminders that you care and love them are enough.
There is no "cure", there is nothing wrong with them, nothing needs to be fixed.
It is not just a phase. Embrace their exploration of themselves, don't dismiss.
Be aware of signs of bullying. LGBTQ youth are more prone to being targeted for being different than peers.
