Don't stress. Do your best. Forget the rest.

Testing tips and tricks for before, during, and after exams.

BEFORE testing:

  • Don't cram, study over time - studying over a longer period helps with long-term recall, making it more likely you will remember things come test time.

  • Take regular breaks during studying - this helps improve motivation to study and helps you retain the information better. If you cram your brain, even when it's tired, you're less likely to remember the material.

  • Positive thoughts, visualize success - negative thinking will only increase nerves. Try repeating positive things to yourself, such as: "I am prepared for this test" or "I am smart enough to do well"

  • Get a good night's sleep - your brain does not function at its best if it has not gotten enough rest.

  • Eat something before the test - again, your brain won't function at its best without nourishment!

  • Drink water - ...you know what I'm about to tell you... your brain won't function at its best if you're not hydrated!!

DURING testing:

  • Breathe - breathe in for 3 seconds, hold for 3 seconds, and breathe out for 6 seconds. Repeat. This can help slow your racing mind and anxious thoughts.

  • Trust your gut - usually your first instinct is right. Don't change your answer unless you have a really good reason to.

  • Relaxation techniques - tense each muscle group for 3 seconds, then relax. Release the tension in your muscles to help calm anxiety.

  • Focus - don't pay attention to what others are doing during the test. Focus on your own test and pace, forget the other kids in the room.

AFTER testing:

  • Think positive - there is nothing you can do after it is turned in, so focus on what you can control. Remember everything you did to prepare and reassure yourself that you did your best.

  • Relax - you just spent several hours preparing for a tests (maybe even multiple), so give yourself a break! Do something relaxing or an enjoyable task to reward yourself for a job well done.

  • Remember: it's just a test, it does not define you.
